Tracy Vernon
Artist/Educator
Tracy Vernon received her initial dance training at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre in New York and has since taught and performed traditional dance from Brazil, Haiti, Cuba, West Africa and Puerto Rico.
Tracy has been a guest performer and choreographer for Fla Voodoo; a Haitian drum and dance ensemble, and Earth Drum Council, a West African drum and dance/theater ensemble. She directs two youth performance troupes: Conjunto de Bomba Puerto-Rican music and dance, and Dance Theatre Ensemble. She was a guest teacher for five years for the University of Massachusetts Fine Arts Center teaching Afro-Caribbean dance to students in the inner city from pre-school to high school. During that time, she developed an inter-disciplinary dance curriculum called Community Dance for Children.
Tracy has a master’s degree in Creative Conflict Resolution Through the Arts from Lesley University. She has been teaching creative expression, community building, conflict resolution, and violence prevention to students from pre-school through high school, and has developed a curriculum in which history and play production are integrated with creative conflict resolution training.
Tracy has been an artist/educator with ECT since the fall of 2000, and is the dance educator of Amherst Regional High School. She is a master teacher and is active in our artist-in-residence programs and in facilitating professional development workshops. Tracy was awarded a 2007 Excellence in Education award by the Harold Grinspoon Foundation. In January of 2009, Tracy received the Annual Citizen Award from the Martin Luther King Jr. Committee and in June, she was awarded the Robert Frost Chair for 09-10 at Amherst Regional High School.
