Enchanted Circle Theater is committed to finding exciting new ways of infusing theater arts into the process of learning. Hear our Voices is a project of the Treehouse Foundation. Its goal is to engage women and girls in a continuum of activities designed to help promote empowerment and voice, and ultimately to influence policies and practices affecting children whose lives have been impacted by foster care.

in 2010, ECT joined forces with Stephanie Moore, director of Holyoke Rows, and approximately sixteen women and girls, ages 14 – 83 from the Treehouse. We learned to row and move past our comfort zones on the water. Several participants did not swim. We began in an imaginary boat, on imaginary water to embody the experience of rowing in sync with each other.

Learning to row became our metaphor for taking on challenges in life.  We explored intentionality of thought and action through improvisation. We articulated our fears and stated our goals through "I" Statements and Poetry.  We listened to each other with our hearts, and practiced being responsible to ourselves and others. The creative process of becoming empowered became rich material for our writing.

“I liked feeling so responsible. I was so impressed with how we didn’t panic.  Everyone did well. Everyone was responsible for being part of the solution.”
~ Stephany, age 19

"I felt like we were all equal. I’m 75 and I felt like I was pulling my load with these strapping young people."

~ Mary, age 75
