HOMEWORK HOUSE
ECT has been partnering with the Homework House in Holyoke since 2008, infusing theater arts into their core mission. The mission of the Hmework House is to provide free after-school tutoring and mentoring for children in Holyoke, MA who are at-risk for academic failure and dropping out of school.
ECT has cultivated creativity and expression at the Homework House through our Poetry into Performance program. We've trained teenagers to read to younger participants with our Youth Readers program developing leadership and confidence and we've provided opportunities for families to get turned on the reading through Reading Alive!
2011 programming features ArtsFriday. ArtsFriday gives students at Homework House an opportunity to experience four distinct arts disciplines through personal exploration and observation. Each month a specific group of students work with a professional teaching artist from Enchanted Circle Theater to explore theater, music (drumming), dance (hip hop), and poetry. At the end of the year, they share their work with family, friends and the larger community.
"The children of Homework House looked forward to our ArtsFriday program especially when we collaborated with Enchanted Circle Theater in the Reading Aloud activity. The excitement of the older children preparing to read to the younger ones was electric. The smaller children were enthralled with the storytelling. Thanks to ECT, the older children were well prepared and felt affirmed in their reading skills."
