Free Public Peformance from our Youth and Shakespeare Summer Program
Youth and Shakespeare: Reconstructing the Connection kicks off its third summer of programming this year with classes in Springfield and Holyoke, MA.Youth and Shakespeare is a five-week intensive summer school program for rising 8th and 9th grade students in Springfield and Holyoke, MA. The program integrates theater and performance studies with academic English Language curricula and culminates in a public performance of scenes from a Shakespearean play. This year's program will feature As You Like It, and Julius Caesar. This hands-on experience enhances reading, writing, and comprehension skills, and develops self-confidence and self-esteem as students learn the disciplines of theater and performance from highly qualified teachers and theater teaching artists.
The program is a creative collaboration between Enchanted Circle Theater, Massachusetts Center for Interdisciplinary Renaissance Studies, the Holyoke Public Schools 21st Century Connections Program, the Springfield Public Schools Office of Visual and Performing Arts, University of Massachusetts, and Hampshire Shakespeare Company
The program includes four field trips with visits to the Mt. Holyoke Museum of Art, The UMass Theater Department and the Botanic Garden of Smith College and the Smith College Museum of Art, and a preview performance of The Complete Works of Shakespeare at New Century Theatre.
Our final performances will take place Wednesday, August 4th at 1:30 on stage at the UMass Renaissance Center. More details to follow. Save the date - this is a performance not to be missed!
"When I started this program I was that girl in the corner that did not say much.this changed me more than I thought." Student reflection, 2008
