FROM PAGE TO STAGE is a compilation of poetry, prose and dramatic readings from American Literature designed to inspire teenage audiences to read. The production is performed in reader’s theater format; with four actors on stage, shifting scenes and roles with minimal stage craft, sets or costumes. Using the unifying theme of "the outsider", selections for this production have been chosen from several middle and high school reading lists, as well as from other contemporary sources to include more women and writers of color.

By celebrating authors from a wide variety of backgrounds and ethnicities, this production ignites the reader and creative writer in every student. FROM PAGE TO STAGE includes scenes from the plays: Diary of Anne Frank, Miracle Worker, The Old Man and the Sea, and Sure Thing. Selected poets include Maya Angelou, Judith Ortiz Cofer, Countee Cullen, Emily Dickinson, Martin Espada, Langston Hughes and Walt Whitman, as well as poems by teenage boys.

The focus of the production is on the interpretation of the text, and connecting the audience to the written material. Through interpretive movement, dramatic speech, and rhythmic styling, the performers create physical relationships between the characters on stage and the audience.

“We are inner city. Forty percent of our 6th graders read below the 25th percentile. Our students, who sometimes are rude and noisy - were attentive, well-behaved and focused during the performance. This performance held their interest and motivated them. This is the way to increase reading achievement scores—by motivating students to read!”

~Guidance Counselor, Attucks Middle School, Hollywood, FL

“Thank you for presenting a week of outstanding performances for the Discovery Theater at the Smithsonian Institution. From Page to Stage introduced students to a wide range of literature and whetted appetites for reading. The acting and choice of interpretation delighted our middle school audiences and gave teachers insight into effective techniques for teaching literature and motivating students to read and write.

I was especially pleased to see the diversity of authors included in your play. Our student population represents cultures from around the world, all of whom deserve to have writers from their homeland recognized and affirmed."

~Program Director, The Discovery Theater, The Smithsonian Associates, Washington, DC

”We just loved your performance yesterday at the Carmichael Auditorium Theater. I took almost 40 ESL advanced and other students to see the show and they were spellbound. The ideas of the show were relevant, timely and inspiring to all of us! Thanks for making poetry real, bringing books to life and showing them that reading is so important.”

~Teacher, Minnie Howard School, Washington, DC
