CONGA-phonics:
Arts Integration for Early Readers
CONGA-phonics is an innovative new curriculum approach for teaching early reading skills to young children using literacy-based, integrative arts activities. Created by Priscilla Kane Hellweg and Tracy Vernon, education specialists at ENCHANTED CIRCLE THEATER, this program is designed to develop a child’s ear for language, using a multi-layered concept of repetition and engagement. The program incorporates theories of child development and learning, arts integration styles, multiple intelligence theory, responsive classroom techniques, and multicultural education, into creative movement, music, drama and visual arts explorations.
Early Childhood Educators who attend this workshop series will receive instruction in the principals of CONGA-Phonics and arts integration techniques. The workshops are designed to give teachers the techniques and confidence they'll need to explore rhythm and integrative arts in the classroom.
“This is the first workshop that I’ve been to in over 10 years that I can say I learned from- in so many ways. I can’t wait until school to do this with the children!”~ Preschool teacher, Chicopee, MA
