LIVING HISTORY
A Study in Multiple Perspectives
In this 10 day artist-in-residence program, we will focus our attention on a particular time and place in history, relevant to the classes’ curriculum plan for the year, and explore major events of the time from multiple perspectives. Each student will be asked to choose one person to study. Using primary source documents and other resource materials, students will research their chosen person and write “interpretive monologues” in the first person narrative style. As part of the research and development process, students will engage in brainstorming and/or theater improvisation techniques to imagine and interpret their character’s feelings, in order to find the motivation for their historical actions. Participants will then “try on” their character, finding their particular voice, mannerisms, and physical style. They will envision a historically accurate location where their monologue scene might take place, and imagine their character’s costume. (Whenever possible, costumes will be brought in from our company collection.)
The culminating event for this residency will involve each student presenting their character monologue to the rest of the class, as well as a historical context discussion on the multiple points of view of the characters developed and presented as a whole.
